Storm Water Pollution Prevention (SWPP) Plans
|

Storm Water Pollution Prevention (SWPP) Plans are typically required of commercial/industrial facilities that engage in activities which may result in regulated substances impacting storm water or snow melt runoff from the site. If a facility stores, uses or otherwise handles regulated materials which may impact storm water or snow melt runoff and the facility does not retain such runoff on-site, the facility is likely required to prepare and implement an SWPP Plan according to federal requirements outlined in the Clean Water Act (CAA) and/or National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations outlined in 40 CFR Parts 122-124. The purpose of the SWPP Plan is to minimize the likelihood that regulated materials will adversely impact storm water quality and thus potentially impact surface water quality at off-site receiving waters or waterways.
SWPP Plans
Typical activities/tasks completed as part of a SWPP Plan include:
Evaluate/verify that the facility is regulated and required to maintain a SWPP Plan
Prepare a current/accurate inventory of all hazardous/regulated materials stored/used at the facility
Consult directly with the facility to prepare a written SWPP, which identifies all hazardous/regulated products; quantifies such products; identifies storage methods/locations of such products; identifies potential pathways for migration of accidental spills/releases to reach storm sewers or surface water bodies; and describes steps that will be taken to minimize the likelihood of a release of hazardous/regulated materials to the environment
Conduct periodic storm water sampling at the facility, as required by State and/or Federal regulations
A well designed and fully implemented SWPP Plan is more than just another government regulation demanding compliance; it represents a positive investment in our most important resource of all: unpolluted fresh water. Though often cited as a public and common good, the need to protect the nation's fresh water supply cannot be over-emphasized. Industries that demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding surface and groundwater quality may rightly claim the title of Good Corporate Citizen. In a world where industry is many times perceived as an enemy of the environment, such a title is not without value to other industries, as well as to the public at large. CEG's dedicated and knowledgeable staff can provide companies with SWPP Plans that will help facilities achieve compliance as well as achieve "Good Corporate Citizen" status.
