    Origin
The company name, Canōpus, comes from both the heavens and the Earth.  Canōpus (also known to astronomers as Alpha Carinae) is the second-brightest star in the night sky, surpassed in magnitude only by Sirius.  Canōpus is best seen from southern latitudes as the brightest member of a cluster of four stars suspended just above the horizon during the winter months.  The name was originally derived from the legend of the Trojan War.  The constellation Alpha Carinae was once part of the now-obsolete constellation of Argo Navis, which represented the ship used by Jason and the Argonauts.  The brightest star in the constellation was given the name of a ship's pilot from another Greek legend, Canōpus who was the pilot of Menelaus' ship on his quest to retrieve Helen of Troy after she was taken by Paris in the Iliad.

The United States Navy christened one of its most important battle group support ships Canōpus in the late 1930s.  The original USS Canōpus served with distinction in the South Pacific during World War II and was replaced by a more sophisticated vessel in the early 1960s, which saw duty at various overseas ports including Rota, Spain and Holy Loch, Scotland until the late 1970s.
